Varicose Vein

Uncategorized / July 2, 2019

I love my job!  It is amazing to be able to help our clients reach their anti-aging goals and feel better about themselves.  At Premier Skin Clinic, we go beyond strictly cosmetic procedures.  With our sister clinic, Premier Medical Groups, we are now offering Free Varicose Vein Screenings!

Varicose Vein Disease

Varicose vein disease treatment is a favorite of mine as I had my veins treated and couldn’t believe the results!  Before treatment, my legs were achy, heavy and tired.  I couldn’t wait to prop them up at night after a long day of work.  I lost my ankles due to swelling whenever I traveled.

Varicose vein disease is highly genetic and ran rampant in my family.  I had an evaluation of my legs and, sure enough, I had varicose veins.  The treatment was simple.  It was a quick procedure with minimal discomfort and no downtime.

My Personal Experience

I was back to work the same day!  My legs felt lighter and more energized.  I didn’t realize the full extent of my symptoms as they progressed over a long period of time.  I thought it normal to have aching, tired legs at the end of a long day.  Not so!

Varicose vein disease (yes, it is a disease) is a common disorder that is frequently underdiagnosed and undertreated.  It is estimated that 50% of the US population over the age of 50 has varicose veins.

A common misperception among the general population is that bulging or visible veins must be present. In fact, most patients with varicose veins do not have bulging or visible veins.

Symptoms of varicose veins include:

  • An achy or heavy feeling in your legs
  • Burning, throbbing, muscle cramping and swelling in your lower legs
  • Worsened pain after sitting or standing for a long time
  • Itching around one or more of your veins
  • Skin discoloration

Varicose Vein Risk Factors

Risk factors for varicose veins include family history, over the age of 30, blood clots in superficial or deep veins, prolonged standing, heavy lifting, multiple pregnancies, limited physical activity, high blood pressure and obesity.

There’s no way to completely prevent varicose veins but improving your circulation and muscle tone may reduce your risk of developing varicose veins or getting additional ones.

The same measures you can take to treat the discomfort from varicose veins at home can help prevent varicose veins, including:

  • Exercising
  • Watching your weight
  • Eating a high-fiber, low-salt diet
  • Elevating your legs
  • Changing your sitting or standing position regularly
  • Wearing compression stockings

Varicose Vein Treatment

If symptoms continue despite preventative measures, medical intervention may be necessary.

Today, treatment of varicose veins is a minimally invasive, outpatient procedure with little to no downtime.  Treatment options include using laser or radiofrequency catheters to heat up the vessel causing it to close or instilling surgical glue to close the vessel. Treatment of varicose veins is covered by most insurances.

Premier Skin Clinic offers a free consultation to people experiencing symptoms of varicose veins. The consultation includes a complete ultrasound evaluation of the leg veins and a discussion of the results and treatment options if necessary.  Call us today to schedule your free consultation!
